Hills

I peeled my eyes open this morning to find Anna standing in the hallway inquiring if I'd run with her. I remember asking, "Am I going to slow you down if I'm sore?" She replied in the negative. So I arose and put on my new Saucony running shoes and began stretching in the entry.
As we hit the road, Anna asked, "hills or no hills?" I was indifferent and gave a noncommittal reply. She insisted I decide. "Hills."
We ran three miles and were home in a decent thirty minutes. Running is always worse during my experience than in my memory, but this morning's run seemed particularly bearable. Maybe the shoes are magic....
Other accomplishments for today include replacing the headlights and fog lights on my Passat, replacing the fuse for the fog lights so they work, shopping with Sara and Mom at Blick Art Materials, Loft, and REI. As always REI is full of good stuff, but I did not buy anything. I saw some Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultras in a new color. I might get them after a little while. Also, REI is having its used gear sale on December 31st. Stopping at the art store rekindled my thoughts concerning journaling more; I'd like to write more about my experiences. Finally, we stopped by Five Guys for a some fries, and now I'm home.

P.S. Gotta think of what I want from Mom for Christmas....

Repetition

I seem to blog about rain frequently, but it is something that I really love. It rained today. The morning was bright and clear and very very warm, as it has been for the past week. So warm in fact you may find it hard to believe that I went snowboarding yesterday. Anyway, there was some hint that the rain was coming. The billowing cumulous clouds began sliding in around the early afternoon. By 7:30 it was pouring and the air was very warm and humid. The fat droplets falling from the sky in a torrent made gushy little splashes all over the saturated ground. With the rain came bright flashes of lightning and long peels of rolling thunder. It was all over in less than two hours and as the clouds moved on toward the west the setting sun began to peak through painting the sky with its hues of light.

Making Memories

I had a great Memorial Day Weekend camping with my family. I was a little scattered driving back for Graduation, staying the night, then working Saturday morning. I also came back into town to drop Timmy off. Ultimate Frisbee was great, and the Thunderstorm really was exciting. I got sunburned the first day so my personal toaster oven inside my jacket kept me warm. I had a hard time sleeping because of the sunburn on my shoulders and last night the aloe Mom put on made my skin stick to my bed sheets. We had some great times and I'm looking forward to this summer, my last few months in the States for a while.

Gone Camping

I'm going camping today. The weather has cooled down and it's been raining lightly, which is good to keep the allergens down while we are camping. I hauled a ton (literally) of brick yesterday out of a house from a chimney we demolished. An equal amount was hauled out the day before by Mr. Dutton and Brandon. Working early, staying up late, that hows things go for me around here.

Up On The Housetop

Every once in a while a one could make out a thumping bumping sound coming from the roof, but on this particular Friday it wasn't reindeer; it was me putting up our Christmas lights. On Friday we got our tree and I decided that I was going to put our Christmas lights. I made the decision late in the afternoon so I had to get to work before the light totally failed on me. After testing all our outdoor strings of lights I went up on the roof and began to work. Slowly but surely, the day began to fade into night. My position was made less precarious because the strings of lights I was putting up were lit while I worked with them. But as the night began to fall so did the rain. Rain has many forms and this rain was a light misting, just enough to make the entire roof surface wet. The rain felt good, as did my sense of accomplishment at the progress I was making. Eventually the rain stopped, by this time the darkness had completely fallen and night had set in. I finished the first story roof just in time for an appointment I had. I saved the upper for another day, another time.

A Bow In the Sky

The rain today was really nothing more than a light sprinkle, but something about it was different than a usual light sprinkle. The clouds didn't have full control over the sky and the sun, its dying voice to put forth, shone brightly through. It was a beautiful sight. The setting Southwesterly sun shining through the thin clouds cast a vibrant rainbow onto the cloud banks to the North. The pot of gold was nowhere to be found.

Remember When it Rained

It doesn't take much memory to remember the Rain because the sky is falling as I write. The wind whipping it into an intense deluge, the rain streaks from the sky before the individual particles come to a spattering stop on the sodden earth. The trees, standing as stark sentinels, reach to the grey, lowering sky with barren criss-crossing branches. The wind, whistling through the branches, causes them to sway, and sweep as the rain runs down making its way to the roots beneath. I love it when it rains. I love to stand amidst the torrent, the drops fall on my head and shoulders as the occasional gust drives them into my face and eyes. It gives me a sense of adventure, and yet, conversely, I feel a calm observance of nature come over me. I love it when it rains.

Pick Me

Nothing much really going on with me right now. I'm doing school and getting ready to take my ACTs in less than 2 weeks. Other than that I applied for a job at REI; I'd really like to work there for obvious reasons (and some not so obvious). On Saturday we have the youth group Festival of Farm (boring) Fun. I hope that it doesn't rain.

The Trip

It wasn't exactly the camping trip to end all camping trips - thank goodness - but it was a great camping trip. You know, I find it funny. Every year that we have gone to Tumalo State Park our emphasis has been on Frisbee and swimming. This year though, I only went swimming on one day and we only played frisbee twice. Unfortunately, I injured my foot on the first game and then ended up playing on the injured foot for the second game. But this camping trip I had a new focus, one that is more and more beginning to define me as I explore it and it's possibilities: Climbing.

After Church, Sunday morning, we came home and made the final preparations to leave for Central Oregon. Adam drove all the way and when we arrived we began setup. Anna, who normally leads the trailer setup, was AWAL at another campsite so Adam and I set it up with intermittent help from a few others. With that completed I made my way over to the Nutter's site where Anna was. She inquired if we were ready to set up the trailer yet; I informed her it was done. That night after dinner at Cibelli's pizza with Grandpa and Grandma a couple of us played Texas Hold 'Em until 1 o'clock in the morning. The following morning, after breakfast, Adam, Luke, James, and I walked across the bridge spanning the Deschutes River to the cliffs (rim rock) on the other side of the river. There we began to climb. Probably an hour or so later we finally headed back to camp after making our way along the cliff alternating climbing and down-climbing to try another route. Back at camp we found the others getting ready to head to the rapids. Adam and I didn't feel like swimming so we climbed the rim rock on the edge the canyon through which the river flowed. On the top of the ledge we snuck around some guys house in an attempt to find Alex's sandal that he had lost while climbing there the previous day. We were unsuccessful, but Adam did catch a lizard. Later that day Adam Luke, Anna, James, and I went to play Disc Golf at Central Oregon Community College. The course was rough on my disc but we all had a good time. While we waited to be picked after completing the course we all stood around on the soccer field and practiced our driving. That night we played our first Frisbee game. After dinner all of us youngsters made our way across the road to the day-use area. The game went mostly well until during a course of inexplicable events I stepped on a irrigation device and cut my foot. I hurt only momentarily so we all kept playing. A few minutes later my foot began to ache and I knew it was worse than I thought. But, being the trooper that I am, I kept playing a little longer. It all ended when I made one wrong turn guarding Evan. At that point, with the pain filling my foot, I knew that I was done for the night. Adam assisted me over to a picnic table nearby where I attempted to see it by taking a picture with Sara's camera. After putting my sandals back on I rode James's bike back to camp. With Dr. Bower and Nurse Mom present I was fixed up in no time. The next day Mr. Nutter took Luke, Sara, and Me into Bend. We spent a little time wandering around the mall area there before stopping at Starbucks for some drinks. Before Mr. Nutter picked us up Luke and I played a little hackie out in front of the Starbucks. The moves were wild and the outside furniture was flying everywhere, sent there by my high-flying feet. That evening we played another game of Frisbee. I got there a little late and the score was already 3 to 2. I joined the side with 2 points and James moved to the side with 3. I played with my injured foot but it didn't give me much trouble. We ended up winning 15 to 6. That was a happy game. The following day, Wednesday, half of us were to head out for Canby to make it to the Westgate Family Camp. The drive was very nice, we took old highways from Aumsville through Silverton and Marquam to Canby. My post is already too long so I will abbreviate these upcoming days. I played in the ping-pong tournament and was knocked out in the first round. The MarWeBowNezevichKins did very well at the frisbee golf competition and won second place. I took home both of the prizes. The preaching by Scott Dean was very good and was designed to make one t.h.i.n.k. Board games are a staple of family camp and I ended up playing a few. When we played Pirate's Cove I started off very bad, being beaten twice in a row, but ended up in second place. Yes I know, first place loser. All in all family camp was great. Friday night I drove the three hours back to Central Oregon ending at just after 11 o'clock. The drive was great, I like to pass people in the rain and in the the dark. We finished up our week of camping back at Tumalo. On Saturday I finally went tubing on the river. I had my towel with me and I was trying not to let it get soaked. All my attempts were vanity. I was sucked under at one particular rapid and at that point I was barely more soaked than my towel. It was then that I realized that I had lost James's shirt. Leaving my now soaked towel and my inner tube on a rock, I ran back up the path the the point where I had first tipped over, coincidentally losing the t-shirt. I wasn't really sure if I could find it but I had faith that God does care about such seemingly little things as lost t-shirts so I made my way down the river, partly swimming, partly scrambling over rocks. I took a break for one moment and stood one a rock. I scanned the scene and noticed something dusty red underneath the surface of the water across the river's flow. At that moment I knew that I had found it. Jumping off a rock I plunged into the rover and swam violently to get across the flow without being taken downstream too far. I reached the other side and reached under the water. I pulled up the missing t-shirt in my hands. Now victorious I made my way back down the river on the opposite side making my own way through the sagebrush and rocky ground. I finished off my river float at the private bridge spanning the river. I tossed my towel and inner tube up onto the bridge and climb up after. Anna and I walked along the road back to the day use area where the adults were. On the way Anna noticed a shirt next to the road. I picked it up, hey free shirt. It was a little large for me but that the way it was supposed to be worn. After I got to the day use area and laid out my towel to dry, and with my new shirt on, I decided it was time to try some more climbing. I waded across the river and found a little trail through the bushes on the bank of the river to the cliffs beyond. I scrambled a little ways until I found the place that I wanted to start then I took off my sandals and started climbing. Anna took a few pictures of me from across the river and Mr. Meigs said I was going to kill myself. I didn't care, then it was just the rock and me. Thinking, rethinking, a little strength and technique all in one fluid thought and I was at the top of the crag in no time. I down climbed to another area and started again only to be baffled by a difficult crack. No problem though. I just moved around the outcropping of a big boulder and found another way up. After that ascent Mr. Meigs suggested that I be done for now, mostly for their sakes. I complied willing, seeing as how I had just had my fun. I ended up getting to bed early that night and we had to pack up camp the next day. Packing up was work but didn't take very long considering what it used to take to get us going. We finally hit the road and I was looking forward to stopping at Cibelli's one last time before heading home. I wasn't even thinking; when we got to Cibelli's it was closed because it was Sunday and they don't open until 3. Bummer. It turned out to be okay anyway though. After stopping for gas in Sisters we made up our collective mind to stop at the Marion Forks Restaurant with the Nutters, the Meigs, and the Starks. Finally, after a few more hours, heavy traffic on I-5, and some long hauls with the trailer we had made it home with only thirty minutes to get ready for Evening church. Uber Camping Trip successful. Body - Energized. Spirit - Uplifted. Mind - Enlightened.

P.S. Tim is an amazing guy, and he did a great job on the paintballing at Family Camp.

Photog Phailure

I fail at photography. I have this great camera and I always take it everywhere with me too, but I never come home with any pictures. Despite my lack of any photographing my expiriences, I had a great camping trip. The weather was almost perfect, except for a little rain the first night and the following morning, but after that it was clear, if not a little chilly. We played a lot of board games and went shooting a couple of times. I enjoyed myself so much, I can't wait to go again. I love camping!

Finally Having Fun

Well, I had a crazy weekend, but nothing a party guy like me couldn't handle. I started it all off on Thursday by heading down and helping out at the senior car wash. I helped the whole time from 10 until 4 and we raised over 400 dollars. I specialize in cleaning wheels.

On Friday I did normal stuff most of the day, including taking down a big Oak tree in our backyard, but ended it all off well by heading down to REI and J. Crew. I love to spend money and this time I came home with a new shirt from J. Crew and climbing harness from REI. Looking forward to accruing all the gear I need to go climbing.

Saturday was great day, starting at church getting the ground there ready to have new bark dust laid down for Easter. Evan, James, and I devoted our time to removing two large flax plants. By the time we were done all that was left was two craters and a big mess. Upon completion of our duties we headed straight over to Southridge were we commenced an the most amazing Ultimate Frisbee game I have been to in a while. My team ending coming back from 7 to 14 to win the game. We scored 8 points in a row. After frisbee, we played football but I was having a hard time getting into the game. It didn't rain on us while we played frisbee but for the last hour of football the heavens opened up and all manner of things began to fall from the sky. Thoroughly soaked, Evan and I headed home to get ready to go out to Red Robin with Kevin, Hannah, and Katey. Hilarity ensued while we spent two hours at the restaurant. The word 'Fun' does not do justice to what all happened there while we inhabited the premises.

Sunday was mostly normal for me, starting in the morning waking up. Next I went to church and then came home. After lunch I rode my bike to Barnes & Nobles and spent some time there with Luke. That finished, I rode on home and got ready for evening church. After church, Mom and I went to get James, he had gone to the zoo with some friends for a birthday. Driving my car was great, especially since it was night and the bad drivers are few and far between. When I arrived safely home I went to bed.

Today was a good day too. After waking up and all that shenanigans, I did school, which comprised sitting on the couch reading textbooks and practicing my piano. Then Evan and I went out for a little shopping. I can't tell you where we went because while we were out we stopped and bought Anna's birthday present. After that we went to REI and I bought another pair of Smartwool running socks(the most comfortable socks ever). I have had a gift card so I couldn't resist. After dinner we were going to go see Shooter but I couldn't because I'm only 17 and it's rated R. Now I'm here at the end of the day. Now I'm gone.

Snowboarding on Thursday. Texas in 8 days.

When I Win

Today no one showed up for frisbee at one o'clock so we waited around for a while watching soccer. When we went to play a little of our own soccer the Popescus showed up so we played us vs. them. In the middle of the game it started to rain lightly, which only made it colder. After a little while Luke and Alex and showed up. Luke didn't want to play soccer so he waited for us to be done. During soccer I scored four goals. I was so happy. We then started playing fribsee and it started to rain a little harder. Just a few plays into the game I was running after Adam and suddenly my left calf started to feel tight and cramped up really bad. I tried to hobble along for a few steps but I couldn't do it. I went down to the ground and my calf was really tight and it hurt a lot. Adam came over and pressed on it and strecthed it a little. In a little while it felt better but I decided to sit out so I didn't injure myself any further. Standing in the rain and not playing got really cold all of a sudden so I put on Adam's jacket and watched the game, occasionally throwing out my two cents trying to give someone a tip. The rain started to pick up and it was starting to get colder so everyone decided it was time to go. All in all it wasn't too bad even though there was just a few of us.

Exhilarate

Ever since Sara's birthday the wheels in my mind have been turning, trying to come up with a plan on how I could get to the mall and try and find something for Sara for a late birthday present. Yesterday I had a chance to go there and to meet with Luke at the same time. So, after my school was done I and I had talked to Luke I hopped on my bike and headed out. It was the first time in a while that I had ridden anywhere except the stables and I was really glad to be riding again. When I started riding I was cold and the wind went straight through my hoodie, but by the time I was climbing the slight grade I was warmed up and I didn't even notice the cold. When I got to the mall I locked my bike up and went into Starbucks to wait for Luke. I didn't want to get anything to drink until after I had finished what I had come for so I got and ice water. When Luke showed up we spent a little time putting quarters into one of those collection booklet things. When that was finished I headed out roaming the mall looking to complete my mission. I looked around at a few places but nothing really stood out to me. Then I decided I would just go back to American Eagle and buy Sara a gift card and she could get what ever she wanted. With that completed we made our course for the Starbucks to just chill for awhile. I ordered a Caffe Mocha with half the mocha syrup. (Next time I need to order it extra hot.) When we had finished our drinks we had to go to the bathroom and Luke's dad was going to pick him up. Upon completing my business, I was waiting for Luke next to the sinks. While I was waiting I had an interesting encounter with a strange little man. I couldn't understand him and he kept laughing about who knows what. When I asked him what he was laughing about he mumbled something and the only word I made out was "happy." Finally he was finished drying his hands and he left. So did we. Luke was picked up right then and I was left to ride my bike home. When I went outside I found that it was raining, but seeing as there was nothing else I could do I unlocked my bike and started for home.

When I first started into the cold sheeting rain I thought it was going to be a long miserable ride home. But it wasn't long until I just let go of wanting to stay dry and after that I had the most exhilarating, exciting, and blood pumping ride I've ever had in the rain. I didn't care if I got wet and dirty any more, I was riding through puddles and along the gritty bike lane sand dirt were flung up onto my face and clothes. The wind blew needles of ice through my hoodie. In one particular stretch of the rode gritty sandy water was flung into my eyes and I couldn't see. When I passed the new Starbucks on Nimbus Ave. I had to scream shout, scream shout, scream shout, so I just let it all out. People must have thought it was pretty weird seeing a guy ride by on a bike drenched and dirty screaming with pure excitement. When I got home I looked in the mirror, a dirty, speckled, grimy, smiling face beamed back at me. Showering never could feel better than that.
